You mean the closing of Yahoo! Groups in December?
Or do you mean they're also going to close Yahoo! Email?

You are correct about facebook’s censoring Lawrence. I’m in a doll group and they won’t let us post pictures without covering up certain areas of the dolls (specifically Barbies) – ridiculous.  Some do slip through their evil eyes though.

I would not use Google Groups.  I recommend avoiding that.

I guess you can still have files in newly-created Groups.io groups, but only as Attachments.

So you might do something like having a specific message subject which is reserved for Attachments.  It doesn't help with indexing them, but it's better than nothing.

There are two controls in the Message Policies panel of your group's
Settings page that may help:

| Max Photo Size In Email
| Automatically resize photos that are larger than a specific size in
| emails.

Setting this to a small-ish size like 488 x 488 will likely produce
acceptable results, yet save a lot of space in your group's storage.
Even the larger selections are likely to save considerable space
compared to an image straight out of the member's camera (which are
often very large image files).

| Storage Limit Reached
| What to do when the group is out of space.

Setting this one to "Delete Old Attachments" will spare you the effort
of clearing room for new message attachments. The downside is that
there's no way to protect a particularly important or desirable
attachment from deletion.

I don't see an solution for this within the features of a newer Basic
group (lacking the Database feature).

Since you're already a Gmail user maybe Google Sheets can do what you
need. You can make a link to share a sheet with your group, and set the
link to allow anyone who has the link to edit the sheet. That way your
group members don't need Google accounts.

Re: groups.io alternative

FE,

Is groups.io changing their price plan?
They changed it a year ago. But a lot of groups that paid for a year of Premium now have plan expiration dates coming up soon.

The good news is that those groups can renew for another year at the same price. But if they let their plan expire or switch to a monthly plan they'll see the new pricing.
https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/22528
https://groups.io/static/pricing

I guess I am still angry with what Verizon is doing to Yahoo groups.
You've got plenty of company on that opinion. Many people thought that the removal of web features (last year's October Surprise) signaled the inevitability of complete closure. I wasn't so sure at the time, but those people turned out to be right, even if it took Yahoo/Verizon a year to get around to it.

Help. Is groups.io changing their price plan? I had not followed that info. I will search for that info but would appreciate any direction or pointers.  I am whelmed with all the admin activities. We are an all volunteer animal rescue group and have little time or patience for tech surprises.  I guess I am still angry with what Verizon is doing to Yahoo groups.

Re: Yahoogroups to shut down entirely...

FE Baxter

I moved all the groups I moderate to groups.io at the beginning of the year. It was time consuming and confusing for members especially those who were active less often. Facebook groups were established as well since many members use facebook on their smart phones and rarely use email anymore. Sigh. Now there are several places to check for communications (facebook, messenger, text, email) and it is getting to be a admin black hole. More and more, the group activities are on facebook which is much harder for me to moderate. I moderate for two non-profit organizations that are all volunteer including myself so the time all this takes is frustrating.

thanking their card swapping partner in email and attaching a picture

Lawrence,  I have been trying to figure out how to do that. One is just people from my Province and the other is all of Canada which is the group I was trying to move to groups.io.  The Ontario group is very small and everyone knows one another.  I would prefer to have the larger Canada group as io and the smaller Ontario group through email. But that’s not the way it is in reality.

It's still a lot better than YahooGroups, which was limited to 100 Mb, while
gows 1Gb.

Not at all.

As others mentioned, groups on the Basic plan are free (and have always
been).

Unless you use the Premium free trial (a new thing), any newly created
group starts out on the Basic plan. You can use the Upgrade page if you
want more features or more storage (in the Admin part of the column of
links on the left).
https://groups.io/static/pricing

There is a certain amount of confusion afoot because Basic groups
created before August 24th of this year have more features than those
created later. The earlier groups are "grandfathered" with the features
they had when created.

So if you visit Sanctuary while logged in you'll see a bunch of features
in the left column (Polls, Chats, Subgroups, Directory, Calendar,
Photos, Files, Databases, Wiki) that a newer Basic group won't have.
